Why Choose a Black Therapist?

Finding the right therapist is a deeply personal decision, and for many, working with a Black therapist offers a sense of connection and understanding that fosters healing. Lived experiences, cultural competence, and shared perspectives can create a therapeutic space where you feel truly seen, safe and understood. Additionally, sharing a similar racial background with your therapist can significantly enhance trust and understanding, as they are more likely to grasp cultural nuances and address racial trauma effectively.

If you’ve encountered systemic barriers, biases, or racial stressors in your life, having a therapist who recognizes and validates these experiences can be incredibly empowering. Our Black therapists in Chicago bring both the highest professional expertise and cultural competence to their work, creating a space where you can speak openly, be heard without judgment, and explore your mental health with confidence and support.

Addressing Mental Health in the Black Community

Mental health is a critical aspect of overall well-being, and it’s essential to address the unique ,mental health issues experienced by the Black community. Historically, the Black community has faced significant barriers to accessing quality mental health care, including cultural and religious barriers, lack of representation, and systemic racism. These barriers can lead to mistrust, skepticism, and reluctance to seek mental health services.

Black therapists play a vital role in addressing these challenges by providing culturally competent mental health support. They understand the unique experiences and challenges faced by Black individuals and communities, including the impact of racism, discrimination, and trauma. By acknowledging and respecting these experiences, Black therapists can create a safe and non-judgmental space for individuals to express themselves and explore their thoughts and feelings.

Moreover, Black therapists can provide tailored treatment approaches that address the specific needs and experiences of Black individuals. This may include incorporating cultural elements into the therapeutic process, recognizing the impact of racism and discrimination on mental health outcomes, and using evidence-based therapeutic approaches such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, EMDR and more. Visit our approaches page to learn more about the approaches we can take with your unique challenges and therapeutic journey.

The Challenge of Finding a Black Therapist—And How We’re Changing That

Finding African American therapists in Chicago—and across the country—can be difficult. Despite the growing need for culturally competent care, Black therapists make up only about 4% of psychologists in the U.S. (according to the American Psychological Association). This underrepresentation limits access to care and can make it harder for individuals in Black communities to find a therapist who truly understands their lived experiences.

On top of that, cultural and religious stigma around mental health can add another layer of hesitation when it comes to seeking support. Many of our Black clients have told us they sometimes feel:

  • Isolated in their struggles, unsure if a therapist will truly “get it”
  • Concerned about judgment from family or friends
  • Uncertain where to start, given the limited number of Black therapists available

How We’re Meeting the Need

We recognized this gap, and we’ve been intentional about addressing it in meaningful ways:

  • We hire diverse, culturally competent therapists. Our team reflects the communities we serve, ensuring clients can find a therapist who resonates with them.
  • We created Resonate Joy, a nonprofit dedicated to training more Black therapists. Through this initiative, we provide, scholarships to support graduate students pursuing counseling degrees, advanced training & credentials to equip therapists with specialized skills, affinity groups to foster connection and support among minority therapists, and mentorship & development from highly trained mental health professionals.
