The Gift of Awareness
One of the greatest gifts therapy can offer a person is the gift of awareness. I know what you’re thinking…awareness, really? Yes, that’s right. Sitting across from a therapist may feel a bit scary at first, however, looking in the mirror to view yourself in real-time with a trusted professional that aims to create an environment of empathy, safety and compassion can be life-altering. The gift of awareness that therapy can offer is a powerful tool for individuals to gain insight into their past experiences and patterns in order to make positive life changes. I believe awareness can do two things: be a mirror to your past and a friend to your future.
Awareness can be a mirror to your past
Therapy can provide awareness by helping individuals gain insight into their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. It can pinpoint how one’s upbringing played a role in their development. Looking back is done through self-reflection, exploration of past experiences, and examination of patterns in current relationships and interactions. By looking back, individuals can gain a deeper understanding of themselves and their past, which can serve as a mirror of their past. This can help in letting go of negative coping mechanisms and embracing positive ones.
Awareness can be a friend to your future
As one looks back with a therapist, asking questions to bring insight into one’s experiences can help them gain a deeper understanding of themselves, leading to positive changes in their lives. Working in collaboration with a therapist can help an individual begin to look at their experiences in the mirror within the confines of a safe and supportive environment, where they can start to examine their thinking and behavior, and even explore and process their experiences. All of this leads to greater self-awareness, self-acceptance, and self-compassion, making it a friend to their future.
