What is DBT and what can you expect?

Dialectical Behavior Therapy, or DBT, was developed by psychologist Marsha M. Linehan in the late 1980s. She created DBT specifically to help individuals struggling with borderline personality disorder, but it has since been found effective for a wide range of mental health challenges, such as depression, anxiety, and even eating disorders.

At its core, DBT teaches people how to manage intense emotions, improve relationships, and reduce harmful behaviors through four key skills:

  • Mindfulness: Staying present and fully aware in the moment, which helps in understanding and accepting emotions without judgment.
  • Interpersonal Effectiveness: Communicating needs and setting boundaries in a way that strengthens relationships while maintaining self-respect.
  • Emotion Regulation: Understanding and managing intense emotions so they don’t overwhelm or lead to impulsive actions.
  • Distress Tolerance: Learning to cope with and survive crises without resorting to harmful behaviors, by using healthy coping mechanisms.

DBT offers a compassionate and structured approach to building a more balanced and fulfilling life, even in the face of emotional challenges.
