What is EMDR Therapy?

EMDR is a proven, evidence-based therapy designed to help you fully process trauma by involving your body in the healing process. It uses bilateral stimulation, which can include eye movements, tapping, or sounds, to engage both sides of your brain. This helps you work through your emotions and experiences more effectively. EMDR can be done on its own, usually in 15-25 sessions, or integrated into your regular therapy as needed.

How does EMDR Work?

EMDR therapy uses eye movements, tapping, or sounds to stimulate both sides of the brain.  This process helps reprocess traumatic memories and integrate them into your overall life story. When a traumatic event occurs, it can get “stuck” in the brain, causing ongoing distress. EMDR helps to unlock these memories, allowing the brain to process them in a healthier way, reducing their emotional impact.

The science behind EMDR involves how our brains process and store information. During a traumatic event, the brain’s natural coping mechanisms can become overwhelmed, leading to improperly stored memories that cause ongoing stress and negative emotions. Bilateral stimulation in EMDR is believed to mimic the natural processing that occurs during REM sleep, facilitating the brain’s ability to reprocess and heal from these stuck memories. This helps reduce symptoms of trauma, anxiety, and other related conditions, promoting overall mental health.
