You wake up it’s another day.
Internally, you’re met with many emotions. The pain of yesterday, the joy of today, and the uncertainty of tomorrow. The unpredictable rhythms of life can take a toll on your mind, body, and soul. Trauma, unforeseen loss, financial problems, and relational stress are just a few facets of life that can ignite depression, anxiety, grief, uncontrollable anger, or a loss of identity. It may manifest itself as an unexplainable sadness that you can’t seem to escape, an intrusive thought that you can’t erase, or an excruciating knot in your stomach that medicine doesn’t seem to alleviate. These experiences are difficult to navigate and a burden to carry.
But I’ve seen people channel the uncertainty and difficulty and in that there is hope! You can go from a sense of confusion to having confidence and feeling secure. From being afraid of the rawness of your emotions to sharing and processing freely. You don’t have to carry your burden alone, and here lies the beauty of connection and community.
In our work together, we will approach your concerns empathetically. We will ask questions to help you think critically. We will sit together in discomfort. Sometimes in silence. As we enter into a space of vulnerability, transparency, and authenticity, we will patiently work towards building a collaborative relationship. We will journey down a path of self-reflection and discovery. There will be tough conversations, laughter, awkward silence, and unexpected emotions but this will all be worth it on your way to healing, hope, joy, and freedom.
Much of who I am as a therapist is shaped by my upbringing and experiences as a child. I am a first generation African American and a proud descendant of Jamaican parents. Like most bicultural persons embracing my cultural and ethnic identities proved to be challenging at times. However, on my own path of uncovering self I am learning the unfathomable beauty of both. Being raised by a single mother and undergoing the devastation of losing my father spurred on my passion for encouraging and empowering the fatherless, mothers, and those enduring loss.
In the latter part of life the weight and impact of trauma, mental health, and behavioral health concerns has been tangible in my life, family, and community. This has served as a driving force for my work as an advocate of mental wellness through a holistic approach.
There are many disparities and social constructions that have negatively impacted Black people. One that I am intimately acquainted with is societies ideas and beliefs around beauty and worth. For the majority of my life I have been defined by my hair, skin, and physical features, devaluing the beauty of my full self. The dismantling of the lies that shaped my identity and self-concept is arduous but also fruitful. I now know and fully believe that I am loved and fearfully made by God. When not providing therapy I love to sing, play my guitar, write music, dance, spend time with Jesus, engage in insightful conversations about life and finance, and connect with friends and family.
