What is Somatic Therapy?

Somatic therapy is a therapeutic approach that focuses on the mind-body connection, helping individuals heal by tuning into physical sensations and body awareness. Originating from practices in body psychotherapy, somatic therapy draws on research in trauma and neuroscience, recognizing that emotions and memories can be stored in the body as much as in the mind. Unlike traditional talk therapy, which often focuses on thoughts and verbal expression, somatic therapy involves paying attention to bodily sensations, movements, and breath to gently release stored trauma and tension. By doing so, it empowers individuals to process deep-seated stress and trauma in a way that feels grounded and restorative.

Key Somatic Therapy Practices

  • Body Awareness and Grounding

Somatic therapy often begins with cultivating awareness of physical sensations and using grounding techniques, like feeling your feet on the floor or engaging the senses, to anchor you in the present moment.

  • Breathwork

Deep, intentional breathing, such as diaphragmatic or rhythmic breathing, is used to calm the nervous system and release tension stored in the body.

  • Movement and Emotional Release

Clients are encouraged to engage in natural movements, like shaking, stretching, or rocking, to release trapped energy and process unresolved emotions.

  • Nervous System Regulation

Drawing from polyvagal theory, somatic therapy can help clients balance fight/flight and freeze responses, teaching them to respond to stressors with greater resilience.

  • Trauma Release Techniques

Inspired by approaches like Somatic Experiencing, these practices focus on safely discharging trauma held in the body without becoming overwhelmed by it.

  • Mindful Integration

Our therapists guide clients in connecting physical sensations with emotions and thoughts, fostering a deeper understanding of how the body and mind influence one another for holistic healing.

Who is Somatic Therapy Beneficial For?

Somatic therapy can be beneficial for a wide range of individuals, including those who:

  • Have experienced trauma or PTSD
  • Struggle with chronic stress or anxiety
  • Live with physical symptoms related to emotional distress, like muscle tension or chronic pain
  • Feel disconnected from their body or want to build a stronger mind-body connection
  • Seek non-verbal or body-centered approaches to emotional healing
  • Are looking for tools to enhance emotional regulation and resilience
  • Are healing from abuse or trauma and need a gentle, body-centered approach

Benefits of Somatic Therapy

Somatic therapy offers a range of benefits that can help you achieve a deeper sense of well-being by addressing both physical and emotional needs that might be difficult to address using other types of therapies. By focusing on the body as a central part of healing, this approach can lead to meaningful transformations in everyday life.

  • Relief from Trauma and PTSD: Somatic therapy helps release trauma stored in the body, providing a path toward recovery for those struggling with post-traumatic stress.
  • Reduced Anxiety and Stress: By tuning into physical sensations, clients can better manage stress responses, leading to calmer, more balanced emotions.
  • Improved Emotional Regulation: Practicing body awareness helps individuals recognize and respond to emotions in healthier ways.
  • Relief from Chronic Pain and Tension: Many physical symptoms linked to emotional stress, like muscle tension and chronic pain, can be alleviated through somatic practices.
  • Enhanced Self-Awareness and Mind-Body Connection: This therapy encourages mindfulness and a deeper understanding of how emotions impact the body, fostering a sense of wholeness.

Do You Provide Somatic Experiencing?

Yes we do. Somatic Experiencing (SE) is a specific form of somatic therapy created by Dr. Peter Levine that we can implement at our practice. It focuses on helping individuals release trauma by working with the body’s natural stress responses. SE views trauma as energy “frozen” or “trapped” in the body, needing gradual release to prevent symptoms like anxiety and PTSD. While somatic therapy includes various practices like movement and mindfulness, SE is a type of somatic therapy that has its own structured techniques for trauma recovery.
